A retaining wall’s whole job is to hold back a slope. So most people judge one by how the face looks: level courses, tight joints, clean stone. That’s the part you see, and it’s the part that fools you. The thing that decides whether your wall lasts twenty years or leans over in three isn’t the face at all. It’s water, and what happens to it behind the wall.
We build hardscape up and down the I-35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio, and nearly every failed wall we get called out to look at failed for the same reason. Not bad block. Not a weak footing. Water that had nowhere to go.
Why do retaining walls need drainage?
Retaining walls need drainage because water trapped in the soil behind the wall pushes on it, and that push adds up fast. When the ground behind your wall soaks up rain and can’t drain, the water fills the gaps between soil particles and presses outward against the back of the wall. Engineers call this hydrostatic pressure. It’s the same force that makes a dam hold back millions of pounds of water, except here it’s working against you.
The heavier the soil gets, the harder it pushes. A wall that was designed to hold back dry, well-drained dirt can face two or three times that load once the ground behind it is saturated. Drainage is what keeps that from happening. Give the water an easy path down and out, and it never gets the chance to build up and lean on your wall.
Why do retaining walls fail in Central Texas?
Most retaining walls in Central Texas fail because of our clay soil and our rain, working together. A lot of the ground along the I-35 corridor is expansive clay. It swells when it’s wet and shrinks when it dries, and that movement alone is rough on anything anchored in it. Now add water it can’t shed.
Clay drains slowly. When we get one of those Hill Country downpours that dumps a few inches in an hour, water pools in the soil behind a wall and just sits there. The clay swells, the hydrostatic pressure spikes, and a wall that looked perfectly fine all summer starts to bulge or tilt. That’s why so many failures show up right after a big storm. The wall didn’t suddenly get weaker. The load behind it suddenly got a lot bigger.
Slopes make it worse. On Hill Country lots, water runs downhill and collects against whatever’s in its way. If your wall is at the bottom of a grade with no drainage, it’s catching runoff from everything above it.

What happens if a retaining wall has no drainage?
With no drainage, water builds up behind the wall until something gives. It’s a slow-motion process most of the time. First you might notice the wall leaning slightly, or a gap opening at one end. Then the courses start to separate, or the face bulges out in the middle where the pressure is highest. Joints crack. In a segmental block wall, the blocks can shift out of line. In a mortared stone or concrete wall, you’ll see stair-step cracking.
Then a storm comes through, the soil saturates one more time, and the wall that was hanging on finally goes. We’ve seen walls fold over in a single afternoon that had been quietly losing the fight for years. The frustrating part is that the fix would have been cheap at the start. Rebuilding after a collapse never is.

What does proper retaining-wall drainage look like?
Proper drainage is a system built into the wall from the back, and it comes down to a few pieces working together. Here’s what we put behind a wall done right:
- Free-draining gravel backfill. Instead of packing the original clay right up against the back of the wall, we backfill with clean crushed gravel or angular rock. Water moves through the open spaces between the stones instead of getting stuck in dense soil. This is the single most important part, and it’s the part nobody can see once the job’s done.
- A drain pipe at the base. A perforated pipe runs along the bottom of the gravel, collects the water that drains down, and carries it out to daylight or a drain away from the wall. The Federal Highway Administration’s guidance on retaining wall systems treats subsurface drainage as a core part of wall design, not an add-on, and the same logic applies to a backyard wall.
- Weep holes or outlets. On some walls we build weep holes into the face so water has a direct escape route. On others, the base pipe handles it. Either way, the water needs a way out, not just a way in.
- A filter layer. Landscape fabric between the clay and the gravel keeps fine soil from washing into the gravel and clogging it over time. Drainage that silts up stops draining.
- Geogrid for taller walls. Once a wall gets tall, backfill drainage alone isn’t enough to handle the load. We lay geogrid, a strong plastic mesh, in horizontal layers back into the soil as we build. It ties the wall to the ground behind it and spreads the load so the whole reinforced mass resists the pressure together.

None of this shows on the finished face. That’s the whole point, and it’s why you can’t judge a wall by looking at it. Two walls can look identical from your patio. One has a full drainage system behind it and lasts decades. The other has clay packed straight against the block and is on borrowed time. If you’re comparing bids and one’s a lot cheaper, ask what’s going behind the wall. That’s usually where the difference is. It’s also a big reason retaining wall cost can swing so much from one quote to the next.
Do I need a permit or engineer for my wall?
Many Central Texas jurisdictions require a permit and an engineer’s design for retaining walls taller than about four feet, but the exact rule depends on where you live. That four-foot line, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, is a common threshold, and it shows up in the residential codes that many local governments adopt from the [International Code Council](https://www.iccsafe.org/products, and services/i-codes/). Some cities set the bar lower, some tie it to how much soil the wall is holding back, and some require review any time a wall affects drainage or a neighbor’s property.
So don’t guess. Check with your city or county before you build a tall wall, and build in engineering when the height or the slope calls for it. A short garden wall holding back a foot of soil is one thing. A wall holding back a Hill Country grade with a house above it is a structure, and it deserves to be treated like one. You can’t judge a retaining wall by its face. The stuff that keeps it standing, the gravel, the pipe, the geogrid, lives behind the wall where you’ll never see it. Water is what pushes walls over, our clay and our storms make that push worse than most places, and drainage is the thing that beats it. Build the drainage in from the start and the wall does its job quietly for decades. Skip it to save a few dollars, and you’re just scheduling the rebuild.
