Clear water is the first thing people brag about, and the last thing that actually proves a pond is healthy. You can have water you could read a newspaper through that’s still starving fish of oxygen. You can also have a little green tint on a pond that’s perfectly balanced and full of life. If you own a pond along the I-35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio, the summer heat here makes that difference matter more than most people think.
We build and maintain ponds and stormwater systems across Central Texas, so we see both kinds all the time. Here’s how to tell whether your pond is really doing well, and what to actually do about it.
What makes a pond actually healthy?
A healthy pond is one with steady oxygen, good circulation, balanced nutrients, and a stable water level, and clarity is only a small part of that. Think of it like a small living system instead of a swimming pool. The water is just the container. What matters is what’s happening inside it.
Oxygen is the big one. Fish, beneficial bacteria, and the whole food web run on dissolved oxygen. When oxygen drops, the good bacteria that break down waste slow down, muck builds up on the bottom, and you get that rotten-egg smell on a hot morning. Warm water holds less oxygen than cool water, so Central Texas ponds are fighting an uphill battle from June through September.
Circulation ties into that. Still water separates into layers, warm on top and cold and oxygen-starved on the bottom. When a storm or a cold front finally mixes those layers, the bad bottom water can spread through the whole pond and kill fish overnight. Keeping water moving prevents that split in the first place.

So clarity is nice, but it’s near the bottom of the list. A pond can be crystal clear and still be low on oxygen, overloaded with fish, or slowly leaking. Judge health by the whole picture.
Why does my pond turn green?
Your pond turns green because algae is feeding on extra nutrients, and Central Texas heat gives it everything it needs to bloom. Algae is not a disease. It’s a plant, and like any plant it grows when it has food, sunlight, and warmth. In summer here you’ve got sunlight and warmth in spades, so the thing you can actually control is the food.
That food is nutrients, mostly nitrogen and phosphorus. It comes from a few common places:
- Runoff from lawns, pastures, and driveways after rain, carrying fertilizer and soil.
- Grass clippings and leaves that blow or wash in and rot on the bottom.
- Too many fish, or overfeeding fish, which loads the water with waste.
- Livestock or wildlife that get into the water on rural properties.
When those nutrients pile up, algae eats well and the pond goes green or grows long stringy mats. The frustrating part is that killing algae with chemicals doesn’t fix the cause. The dead algae sinks, rots, and releases its nutrients right back into the water, which feeds the next bloom. You can end up on a treadmill, treating the same pond every few weeks all summer. How do I keep a pond clean and clear?
Keep a pond clean by controlling what goes into it, moving the water, and letting nature do most of the filtering. Chasing clarity with chemicals alone is a losing game. Here’s the order we work in.
Start with runoff. Most nutrient problems come from water flowing off the land around the pond, so grading, swales, and buffer strips of grass or native plants around the edge catch a lot of that before it hits the water. This is the same drainage and grading work we do on stormwater jobs, and it’s the least glamorous and most effective fix there is.

Add aeration. An aerator or fountain keeps oxygen up and water moving, which helps the good bacteria break down waste instead of letting it pile into muck. In our heat, aeration is close to a must-have for any pond with fish. It’s cheap insurance against a summer fish kill.
Use plants on purpose. The right marginal and aquatic plants compete with algae for nutrients and give fish shade and cover. Cattails, rushes, and other native edge plants do real work. The trick is control, because a plant that takes over is its own problem, so you want coverage but not a takeover.
Manage your fish load honestly. More fish is not better. Overstocked ponds produce more waste than the water can process, which feeds algae and crashes oxygen. Go easy on feeding too, since uneaten food is just fertilizer.
Pull debris before it rots. Skim leaves, clear grass clippings, and keep the inflow clean. Every bit of organic matter you remove is nutrients you keep out of the water.
Do all of that and clarity usually takes care of itself, without a shed full of chemicals.
How often does a pond need maintenance?
Plan on a quick weekly check, a closer monthly look, and a full seasonal review in spring and fall, with summer needing the most attention. Ponds aren’t set, it, and forget, it, but they don’t need daily fuss either. A simple rhythm keeps small problems from becoming expensive ones.
Weekly, just walk the pond. Look at the color, look for surface scum, check that the aerator or fountain is running, and glance at the water level. Two minutes tells you a lot.
Monthly, look closer. Check plant growth, clear any debris, and note whether fish are acting normal. Fish gulping at the surface in the early morning is a classic low-oxygen warning sign in Central Texas summers.
Seasonally, do the real work. In spring you’re cleaning out winter debris and getting aeration tuned up before the heat. In fall you’re cutting back plants and clearing leaves so they don’t rot under the winter water. Summer is when evaporation and heat hit hardest, so that’s when you watch levels and oxygen most closely.

That brings up water level, which is where a lot of owners get fooled. In a Central Texas summer, evaporation alone can pull an inch or more off a pond in a week, so some drop is normal. But if the level keeps falling faster than that, or keeps dropping even after a good rain, you may have a leak. Watch how fast it goes down and whether it settles at a certain depth. A slow steady loss that never recovers usually means water is escaping through the bottom or a bank, and that’s worth having someone check before you lose the whole pond.
Clear water is a starting point, not the finish line
The healthiest ponds we maintain in Central Texas aren’t always the clearest, and the clearest ones aren’t always healthy. Oxygen, circulation, controlled nutrients, sensible fish loads, and a stable water level are what keep a pond alive through our summers.
